Delphine Benouaich Submits Sofia Montenegro in Stunning UFC Debut
Delphine Benouaich made her UFC debut look like a statement, not a tryout. The French strawweight finished Sofia Montenegro with a rear-naked choke at 4:22 of round two to open UFC Paris, putting Montenegro out cold in front of a roaring Accor Arena.
The bout was the first fight of UFC Fight Night 287, the Paramount+ prelims under Dan Hooker vs. Salahdine Parnasse. Both women were making their promotional debuts at 115 pounds.
Benouaich entered 7-2. She left 8-2, and Montenegro fell to 6-3.
They barely touched in the clinch early. UFC.com reported Benouaich landed more than 75 significant strikes in a first round that stayed on the feet from the opening bell.
Round two turned in a hurry. Sherdog’s live report said Benouaich staggered Montenegro with a right hand, drove her to the canvas, took mount, and opened cuts with elbows before spinning to the back.
The choke was tight enough that Montenegro lost consciousness. The official result was listed as a technical submission by rear-naked choke.
That is a debut the building came to see. Benouaich, 31, is from Évry, a former PE teacher, and a Team Cormier product from The Ultimate Fighter Season 34, where she reached the semifinals before a unanimous decision loss to Valesca Machado.
She turned over a short professional résumé that already included Ares Fighting Championship. Her last win before the UFC was a first-round guillotine of Lindsey Payne in December. A split decision loss to Ingrid Silva in September was the only blemish on that recent run.
Montenegro, 27, fights out of Córdoba, Argentina, as “La Bruja.” She came in with a 6-2 record and was a slight underdog in a matchup that looked even on paper.
It was not even after the right hand. Benouaich chased the finish instead of settling for a decision in her first UFC night, which is what she said she had trained to do.
Speaking in the cage after the stoppage, she said she expected a hard fight and that Montenegro had stunned her. She also said she could not hear well in one ear, but that the work had been aimed at more than a close debut.
The crowd treated it like the start of a French night. Nora Cornolle, Matthieu Letho Duclos, Fares Ziam, and hometown headliner Parnasse were still to come on a 14-fight card in Paris.
Strawweight is a deep list. Wins like this do not hand anyone a ranking overnight, but they do put a 31-year-old finisher on the division’s watch sheet after one appearance.
Benouaich’s amateur background includes a bronze medal at the 2022 IMMAF European Championships. The UFC cage is a different test, and she passed it by mixing the striking that won the first round with the grappling that ended the second.
Montenegro took a beating on the ground before the lights went out. There is no shame in a debut loss that violent, only a long recovery and a chance to show the first round was closer to her level than the finish.
Paris is still live. The prelims continue, the main card is built around Parnasse’s own debut against Hooker, and Benouaich has already given the home crowd a finish to carry into the rest of the night.
Her next booking is unannounced. A performance this complete usually means the UFC will not wait long to find out whether it was a one-off or the start of a real strawweight run.
