Gervonta Davis Offers Ryan Garcia Rematch at 144 Pounds
Gervonta Davis moved off his first number and told Ryan Garcia he will fight a rematch at 144 pounds. The offer landed on X hours after Garcia said Tank would not climb to the full welterweight limit, and it came with a public note that Al Haymon had already been looped in.
Garcia opened the exchange after stopping Conor Benn in two rounds on September 12 to keep the WBC welterweight title. He pointed at Davis and said the Baltimore southpaw was dodging the weight that now defines his career.
“Gervonta cool but he don’t want the smoke,” Garcia wrote. “What’s up with you. I went to 136 you can’t come to 147 don’t be shaky now. I need that if you want it. If not there’s nothing to be said.”
Davis had already posted on Instagram that he would go to 140 and no higher. The account tied to him, MoneyTwofly, then quoted Garcia’s demand and raised the number by four pounds.
“Already talked to Al,” the first reply read. The second went further. “No lie for you I’ll do 144…word say it’s a bet!! And I’ll get this sh*t I’m going through out the way! Just give the word!!”
The graphic that followed tagged Garcia’s Instagram and added the line the first fight made famous. “@kingryan let’s dance.”
That first meeting was April 22, 2023 at T-Mobile Arena. Davis stopped Garcia in the seventh round with a left hand to the body after both men made a 136-pound catchweight and a 10-pound rehydration cap. Garcia has said the cut left him weak. His camp has never wanted those terms again.
The positions have flipped in three years. Garcia is 26-2 with 21 knockouts and the WBC belt at 147 after knocking out Mario Barrios in February and Benn in September. Davis is 30-0-1 with 28 knockouts and has not fought since a majority draw with Lamont Roach Jr. on March 1, 2025. The WBA later listed him as champion in recess and stripped the lightweight title amid inactivity.
Davis’s post about getting “this sh*t I’m going through out the way” is the only detail he offered on why a date is not on paper yet. No contract, purse split, or venue has been announced. Haymon’s involvement matters because Premier Boxing Champions still controls Davis’s side of any negotiation.
Garcia has no incentive to drop back to 136, and he has said as much. He already made that concession once and lost. Asking Davis to come all the way to 147 is the mirror of what Tank asked of him in 2023. The 144-pound number sits in the middle, three pounds under the welterweight limit and four above the junior-welterweight line Davis first floated.
Whether that gap closes is the entire story. Garcia can stay at 147 and chase Teófimo López or a Devin Haney rematch without ever answering the 144 offer. Davis can wait for legal and promotional issues to clear and still refuse the last three pounds. Neither man has to blink.
A rematch would be one of the biggest domestic fights left in the sport. The original did more than a million pay-per-view buys. Garcia is a bigger star now than he was as an undefeated lightweight. Davis remains the last man to knock him out. That history is why the weight argument is happening in public instead of in a quiet room.
