Ryan Garcia Wants Gervonta Davis Rematch at 147 Pounds
Ryan Garcia is not treating the Gervonta Davis rematch as a maybe. Two days after stopping Conor Benn to keep the WBC welterweight title, the champion told Ariel Helwani he wants to “clean that up” at 147 pounds and accused Davis of backing away from that number.
Garcia posted the challenge first. On September 14 he wrote that Davis was “cool” but did not want the smoke, then laid out the weight demand that now sits between them.
“I went to 136 you can’t come to 147 don’t be shaky now,” Garcia posted. “I need that if you want it. If not there’s nothing to be said.”
Helwani asked if the rematch was something Garcia actually wanted. Garcia did not hedge.
“Oh, I want that, man,” Garcia said. “I wanna clean that up. He don’t want it though. He knows it. He knows I’m a bad man. He don’t want me at 147. So there’s really nothing to be said.”
The first meeting explains why both men are treating the scale like the real negotiation. On April 22, 2023, they met at T-Mobile Arena on a 136-pound catchweight with a 10-pound rehydration clause. Davis dropped Garcia in the second round and finished him with a body shot at 1:44 of the seventh. Garcia has spent three years calling that night an asterisk win. Davis has spent three years treating it as a finished result.
Garcia’s offer now is simple. Davis already got him at 136. Garcia wants the same man at the full welterweight limit.
“Cool, you got me at 136, get me at 147, prove to me that you really like that,” Garcia said. “He doesn’t wanna prove to himself, he doesn’t wanna prove it to me. He’s a little bit of, kind of scared, I ain’t gonna lie.”
Helwani put the same charge in cleaner language and asked whether Garcia had gone through Davis’s camp. Garcia said there has been no real signal that Davis wants the fight on those terms.
“There’s nothing that really made me pull the trigger on it because he’s like, not giving me any indication he wants it,” Garcia said. “It’s kinda like, I’ll go to 140, but not 147.”
That tracks with the public back-and-forth. Davis first said he would come to 140 but not 147. He later raised the offer to 144 through the @MoneyTwofly account and told Garcia to “give the word.” Garcia is not meeting him in the middle. He is treating anything under 147 as Davis keeping an escape hatch.
Garcia even framed Davis’s stance as an attempt to keep the first result on the books without answering the new version of the same fighter.
“Okay, bro, so you’re basically like saying, ‘Nah, I’m cool, I don’t wanna give the rematch, and, you know, I’m gonna escape with this asterisk victory,’ is how I said.”
The power shift is the other half of the interview. Helwani noted that Garcia once chased what Davis had, and that the tables now look flipped. Garcia agreed and pointed back to the risk he took when Davis sat at the center of the sport.
“I showed you what I was willing to do when you had the sport by its balls,” Garcia said. “So it’s funny how tables turn, but if you stay consistent, tables can always turn.”
The records around that comment are current. Garcia is 26-2 with 21 knockouts after the second-round stoppage of Benn on September 12 in Las Vegas. Davis is 30-0-1 with 28 knockouts after a majority draw with Lamont Roach Jr. on March 1, 2025, and has not fought since. Garcia holds the WBC welterweight belt. Davis’s last official home has been lightweight. A 147-pound rematch would be a full jump for the shorter man. A 144-pound catchweight would still leave Garcia three pounds off the title limit he just defended.
Nothing is booked. Garcia did not say he had a signed offer, a date, or a promoter locked in for Davis. He said the rematch only happens if Davis comes to 147, and that anything less tells him Davis does not want the smoke. Davis has already moved from 140 to 144 in public. The next move belongs to whichever side blinks on those last three pounds.
Until that number is settled, the Gervonta Davis rematch stays a callout with a condition. Garcia is the champion asking for his own division. Davis is the man who already beat him asking to keep some of the old weight advantage. That is the entire fight right now, and both of them know it.
