Renato Moicano Faces Tom Nolan in UFC Vegas 123 Main Event
Renato Moicano will fight Tom Nolan in the main event of UFC Vegas 123 on October 31 after Brian Ortega withdrew from their planned rematch at UFC 331. The lightweight bout headlines the Halloween card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and streams on Paramount+.
The promotion confirmed the new pairing on Monday. Championship Rounds relayed the official note that Moicano “will now fight Tom Nolan in the main event of #UFCVegas123 on October 31.” Ortega’s injury pulled the original fight off the September 19 card at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles with only days to spare.
Moicano had already completed camp for Ortega. The Brazilian said he was on weight and called it one of the best preparations of his career before the matchup disappeared. The UFC kept him booked rather than sitting him until 2027 and moved him six weeks later into a five-round Apex headliner.
Nolan gets the biggest assignment of his career. The 26-year-old Australian is 11-1 as a professional and has won five straight inside the Octagon. His most recent victory was a unanimous decision over Fares Ziam on June 6, a result that pushed him into ranked lightweight conversations and put a former title challenger on his calendar.
Moicano enters at 21-7-1. He last fought on April 4 and submitted Chris Duncan with a face crank in the second round of a Fight Night main event. That win followed two losses at the top of the division, a unanimous decision to Beneil Dariush at UFC 317 and a first-round brabo choke finish by Islam Makhachev at UFC 311. The Duncan result put him back in the win column and kept him in the lightweight mix heading into the Ortega booking.
The Ortega rematch had history attached to it. The two first met in 2017, and Moicano had asked for the second fight after Ortega moved up from featherweight. That story is on hold. No return date has been given for Ortega, and the lightweight division will not wait on an injured veteran when a ranked prospect is available on short notice.
Style makes the new fight interesting. Moicano is a black belt who finishes with submissions more often than knockouts and talks as loudly as he grapples. Nolan is a long, rangy striker with a 76-inch reach and a recent habit of turning fights into wrestling-heavy decisions. Five rounds at the Apex gives Moicano time to hunt the neck and gives Nolan time to use size if the Brazilian cannot close the distance early.
A win does different things for each man. Nolan would add the most recognizable name on his record and make a case that he belongs in the next tier of lightweight matchmaking. Moicano would show that a late opponent change did not knock him off the path he was on before UFC 331 fell apart. Neither result books a title shot by itself. Both results change where the division’s middle ranks sit heading into winter.
UFC Vegas 123 already had a women’s bantamweight meeting between Yana Santos and Luana Santos plus Julian Erosa against JeongYeong Lee on the same night. Those bouts remain in place. The headliner is what changed, and it changed because Ortega could not make UFC 331.
Halloween at the Apex is not Crypto.com Arena, and Nolan is not Ortega. The card still gives Moicano a ranked lightweight in a five-round main event after a camp that was built for someone else. That is the trade the UFC made when the original fight died this week.
The next date that matters is October 31. Renato Moicano vs. Tom Nolan is now the UFC Vegas 123 main event, and both men have six weeks to treat it like the opportunity it became when Ortega stepped aside.
