Miles Johns Scores First-Round TKO of Gianni Vazquez at UFC Vegas 120
Miles Johns snapped a three-fight losing streak with a first-round TKO victory over Gianni Vazquez at UFC Fight Night on Saturday.
The featherweight bout took place on the preliminary card of UFC Vegas 120, also known as UFC Fight Night: Gamrot vs. Salkilld, at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. Johns finished the fight with punches at the 3:09 mark of Round 1.
Johns improved to 16-5 with one no contest overall and 7-5 with one no contest inside the UFC. The 32-year-old American, nicknamed “Chapo,” entered the matchup after consecutive losses to Felipe Lima, Jean Matsumoto and Daniel Marcos.
Vazquez fell to 14-7 as a professional and 0-2 in the Octagon. The Mexican fighter stepped in on short notice after Jessie Rosas withdrew due to a forehead injury, returning to the UFC months after a previous release.
Johns needed the result after a difficult stretch that put his roster spot in question. He had not finished an opponent since 2021 before Saturday’s performance.
In a post-fight interview, Johns reflected on the pressure surrounding the bout. “I was wondering: What if this is the last one?” he said.
The knockout provided a clear response. Johns turned the tables quickly once the action heated up and landed the decisive strikes that forced the stoppage.
Vazquez had shown promise on the regional scene and in his earlier UFC appearances but struggled to contain Johns once the Kansas native found his range. The finish marked Johns’ fifth career knockout and his first in nearly five years.
The win gives Johns breathing room in a competitive featherweight division. It also ends a skid that had seen him drop decisions and a submission in his previous three outings.
Both men competed at 145 pounds after shifting from their more common bantamweight homes for this assignment. Johns’ ability to secure the early stoppage should factor into future matchmaking as the UFC evaluates its 145-pound roster.
Johns now looks ahead with renewed momentum. The finish offers a foundation for the next chapter of his UFC career after a stretch that tested his place on the roster.
