Piero Guaylupo Sweeps Callum Connor After Scoring Lone Knockdown
Piero Guaylupo kept his record clean without winning the stat sheet.
The 21-year-old Peruvian took a unanimous decision over Callum Connor on Tuesday at Dana White’s Contender Series Season 10, Week 7, with all three judges scoring it 30-27.
The lightweight bout went the full 15 minutes at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas.
Guaylupo improved to 13-0. Connor fell to 8-1.
The numbers explain why the cards still looked one-sided. Connor landed 265 of 377 total strikes. Guaylupo landed 213 of 319.
Significant strikes followed the same pattern. Connor connected on 265 of 377. Guaylupo landed 209 of 314.
Connor also won the body work, 81 of 96 to 39 of 43, and the leg kicks, 14 of 15 to 7 of 9.
None of that moved a judge.
Guaylupo scored the fight’s only knockdown. Connor had zero.
That is how a higher-output English prospect can out-land a man for three rounds and still lose every frame. Contender Series judges reward the shot that changes the fight.
Head strikes were nearly even. Connor landed 170 of 266. Guaylupo landed 163 of 262.
The difference was damage, not volume.
Grappling never became a second fight. Connor went 0-for-3 on takedowns. Guaylupo did not attempt one.
Control time barely registered. Connor held 13 seconds. Guaylupo held 32.
They stood and traded. Connor used a four-inch height edge and a longer reach to pile up jabs and body shots. Guaylupo, listed at 5-foot-8, kept walking forward and looking for the one punch that would matter on the scorecards.
He found it.
“El Lobo” came in as a finisher. Ten of his first 12 wins ended by knockout or TKO. This was only his second career decision.
Connor entered 8-0 with six finishes and a recent second-round knockout of Iwanderson da Silva Caldas in April. He trains out of Manchester and brought the size that usually makes a 155-pound range fight simple.
It was not simple once Guaylupo landed clean.
A 30-27 sweep on a night when the loser out-struck the winner is a hard read for a UFC contract. White has already given out 28 deals through six weeks of Season 10. Week 7 contract winners had not been announced with the official result.
Guaylupo’s case is the knockdown and the unbeaten record. Connor’s case is the volume that never got a round.
The Peruvian still has to convince the UFC that a decision against a taller striker is enough. The Englishman has to show the first loss does not erase the work he did for 15 minutes.
Lightweight on the Contender Series rarely waits. Both men are young enough to get another look if White wants more tape.
Tuesday’s tape shows one knockdown and three 10-9 rounds for Guaylupo. It also shows Connor landing 52 more total strikes and still leaving Las Vegas with the first defeat of his career.
