Gervonta Davis Will Fight Ryan Garcia at 140 Not 147
Gervonta Davis drew a hard line on a Ryan Garcia rematch this week and refused to meet him at welterweight. On his official Instagram account, Davis wrote that he would move up one division and stop there.
“I would go to 140 but not 147 for him.”
That comment landed days after Garcia stopped Conor Benn in two rounds on September 12 and kept the WBC welterweight title. Garcia has been calling for the rematch at 147. Davis answered with 140 and nothing higher. The gap is the entire story.
The first fight explains why both men are dug in. On April 22, 2023, they met at T-Mobile Arena at a 136-pound catchweight with a 10-pound rehydration limit. Davis ended it in the seventh round with a body shot. Garcia has spent three years saying those conditions cost him. He is not volunteering to go back down. Davis is not volunteering to walk into Garcia’s current weight.
Garcia is 26-2 with 21 knockouts and now lives at 147. Davis is 30-0-1 with 28 knockouts and has not fought since a majority draw with Lamont Roach Jr. on March 1, 2025. The WBA lists him as lightweight champion in recess. One man just defended a welterweight belt. The other has not been in a ring for 18 months and is still talking like a 135-pound fighter.
Davis later raised the number. Through the X account @MoneyTwofly, he offered 144 pounds and said he had already spoken with Al Haymon. That move closed three of the seven pounds between his first offer and Garcia’s demand. It did not close the fight. Garcia has already said he went to 136 once and will not do it again. He wants Davis at 147 or he wants the conversation to end.
The public talk has turned personal. Garcia told Ariel Helwani that Davis is showing fear by staying off 147. Davis has not answered that charge in an interview. He has only posted the weight he will accept and the weight he will not. “Not 147 for him” is the sentence that matters. It tells Garcia the rematch will not happen on the champion’s terms unless the money or the politics change.
That is why the negotiation is stuck. A 140-pound fight would force Garcia to cut again after he just looked comfortable at welterweight. A 147-pound fight would force Davis to take the biggest walk-up of his career against a taller man who now carries a world title at that limit. 144 sits in the middle and satisfies neither man’s pride. None of those numbers is a signed contract.
Davis still has leverage as the man who already beat Garcia. Garcia has leverage as the active champion with the louder crowd and the fresher win. Both of them can say they want the rematch. Only one of them has named a weight he will not cross. Until that number moves, or Garcia agrees to come down, the second fight stays on social media.
The next step is simple and still undone. Either Davis agrees to 147, Garcia agrees to 140 or 144, or the two camps stop posting and start writing a deal. Right now Davis has said what he will do and what he will not. Garcia has said the same. The boxing public already knows which fight it wants. The two fighters have not agreed on the scale.
