Mirko Cro Cop Reacts to Offered MMA Fight Against Francis Ngannou
Mirko Cro Cop was offered an MMA fight against Francis Ngannou, and the Croatian legend treated the idea like a punchline. In an interview with RMC Sport Combat, the 51-year-old said a serious executive from a major organization asked if he would come back to face one of the most dangerous heavyweights in the sport.
Cro Cop has been retired since March 2019, when a stroke ended a career that finished with a decision win over Roy Nelson at Bellator 216. Doctors told him not to take another fight, and he has stayed out of the cage ever since.
That context is why the call landed the way it did. Cro Cop said the man on the other end of the line knew he still trains and stays in shape, then asked if he would compete with Ngannou.
“I said, ‘What do you mean, did you say fight? Did you use the word fight or did you use the word playing cards, chess, swimming, running? You mean fight?’… I started laughing.”
He wanted to make sure the word was not a joke. When the answer came back as a real MMA bout, Cro Cop said the person on the phone was crazy.
The former Pride openweight Grand Prix champion even ranked the matchup. If he had to make a list from the worst possible opponent to the best, he said Ngannou would be last.
“If I had to fight now and they said make me a list from the worst to the best that you will fight, of course Francis Ngannou will be the last one that I fight.”
That is not a slight at Ngannou’s drawing power. It is Cro Cop acknowledging the size, power, and finishing rate of a former UFC heavyweight champion who has knocked out 14 of his 19 wins.
Ngannou, now 19-3, later proved the point in May when he stopped Philipe Lins by knockout at 4:31 of the first round on Most Valuable Promotions’ Netflix card in Inglewood. Cro Cop did not name that promotion as the source of the offer, describing the caller only as a close friend and the CEO of a large MMA organization.
The proposed date was part of the problem. Cro Cop said the fight was being discussed for May, which would have given him almost no time to prepare after seven years away.
He still put a number on it. Cro Cop said he would take $500,000 for himself to step in with Ngannou.
The rest of the ask was the joke that has followed the clip ever since. He said he would want another $19.5 million for his mother, enough to cover the look on her face when she heard her son was coming back to fight Ngannou.
That $20 million package was never a serious negotiation. Cro Cop used the figure to show how little interest he had in getting hit by a man widely viewed as one of the hardest punchers in MMA history.
“They should have called me three months before, but who would pay 20 million? Who would spend that money when he kills me?”
The humor lands because the risk is real. Cro Cop is a Pride, UFC, K-1, Rizin, and Bellator veteran with a 38-11-2 record and one no contest, including 30 knockout wins, but he is also a 51-year-old man who left the sport for medical reasons.
Ngannou is 39, 6-foot-4, and still finishing fights in the first round. A comeback against that kind of power would have been a spectacle, not a sensible late-career payday.
Cro Cop’s left high kick made him one of the most feared strikers of the Pride era, and he later won the 2016 Rizin openweight Grand Prix before closing his career in Bellator. None of that changes the gap in age, size, and recent activity against Ngannou.
The clip matters because it shows how far promoters will go to pair a famous name with Ngannou, and how quickly a legend will shut it down. Cro Cop did not leave the door open. He laughed, named his price as a punchline, and made it clear he would rather play cards than take that fight.
No Cro Cop vs. Ngannou bout was ever announced, and none is booked now. Ngannou’s next opponent has not been confirmed since the Lins knockout, while Cro Cop remains retired, still training, and still unwilling to let someone like Ngannou hit him in a real fight.
