Michael Chandler Reveals Top-5 Opponent Fell Through Before Mauricio Ruffy Fight
Michael Chandler has revealed that his next fight was originally supposed to be against a top-five opponent, but the matchup fell apart before it could be finalized.
Speaking in an interview with UFC on Paramount, Chandler said he had already accepted a different opponent at the beginning of the process. However, that fighter was not able to compete at the time, forcing the UFC to move in another direction.
“At the very beginning, there was a different opponent that I accepted,” Chandler said. “But he wasn’t able to compete at that time. He is inside the top 5.”
After that, the UFC came back with another name: Mauricio Ruffy.
“They said, what do you think about Ruffy? I said, ‘Of course,’” Chandler added.
Chandler Was Ready for a Bigger Name
Chandler’s comments show that he was willing to take a major fight right away.
A top-five opponent would have been a huge opportunity, especially for someone trying to stay relevant in the lightweight title picture. Chandler has always built his UFC run around exciting fights, dangerous opponents, and high-risk matchups.
So it is not surprising that he accepted the first offer.
The interesting part is that the fight fell through because the opponent could not compete, not because Chandler turned it down.
Mauricio Ruffy may not carry the same ranking as a top-five fighter, but he is dangerous.
Ruffy is explosive, confident, and has the kind of striking style that can create big moments. For Chandler, accepting this fight keeps him active and gives him another chance to remind fans why he remains one of the most entertaining fighters in the division.
It is also a risky fight.
Chandler has more name value, but Ruffy has less to lose and everything to gain. That makes him a dangerous opponent.
Chandler’s Mindset Has Not Changed
Chandler saying “of course” to the Ruffy fight fits his personality.
He has never been the type to wait quietly for the perfect matchup. Since entering the UFC, he has fought elite names, delivered wild moments, and taken difficult fights that many athletes might avoid.
That is why fans respect him.
Even when the top-five fight disappeared, Chandler still accepted another dangerous opponent instead of sitting out.
A Must-Win Situation
For Chandler, this fight matters.
A win keeps him alive for bigger matchups and possibly puts him back near the title conversation. A loss, however, would be a major setback, especially against a rising fighter like Ruffy.
That pressure makes the matchup even more interesting.
Chandler needs to prove he is still a serious lightweight threat, while Ruffy gets the chance to take a huge name.
Michael Chandler revealing that he originally accepted a top-five opponent adds an interesting twist to his next fight.
The bigger matchup fell through, but Chandler did not hesitate when the UFC offered Mauricio Ruffy. That says a lot about his fighting mentality.
He wanted a top-five name, but he still accepted danger.
Now the question is whether Chandler can turn this new opportunity into another statement win
