Dana White Tees Up Noche UFC and Garcia-Benn Doubleheader
Dana White cooked a Mexican shepherd’s pie on F*ck It Friday and used it to sell Saturday as one long combat sports day. Noche UFC starts in Glendale. Ryan Garcia vs Conor Benn closes in Las Vegas. The UFC boss wants both.
The kitchen clip is the holiday pitch. White stands at a stainless counter, ground beef and corn hit a pan, mashed potato goes over the top, and he eats it out of a ramekin while the video cuts to Garcia and Benn in each other’s faces with the green WBC belt between them. Mexican Independence Day weekend is the theme. Two cards on one date is the business.
White has already said he will try to be in both buildings. He planned to fly into Arizona the night before, take Noche UFC at Desert Diamond Arena, then get to T-Mobile Arena for the boxing. “It’s a great day of fights,” he said. “Might be the greatest day in combat sports for the year.”
That is not a small claim from a man who also puts on numbered UFC events. Saturday is built so the MMA show does not crash into the boxing show. Noche UFC’s main card is set for 5 p.m. ET. Garcia vs Benn’s main card is set for 8 p.m. ET. Three hours is the gap he is betting a plane on.
Noche UFC is the company’s Mexican Independence card, headlined by Jean Silva vs Jose Delgado. Brandon Moreno and Alexa Grasso are on the holiday show. Waldo Cortes-Acosta meets Curtis Blaydes at heavyweight. David Martinez meets Dan Ige at bantamweight. It is a Glendale afternoon that is supposed to be over before the Las Vegas night really starts.
Then Zuffa Boxing takes the same streamer and the same boss. Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs) defends the WBC welterweight title against Benn (25-1, 14 KOs) in the champion’s first defense and the Brit’s first world title fight. Jai Opetaia defends cruiserweight gold against Noel Mikaelian in the co-main. White has spent the week in the middle of that promotion, including the staredown he cut short because the two welterweights were freaking him out.
The pie is the joke. Shepherd’s pie is British. Garcia is Mexican American. Benn is British. Noche is the Mexican holiday card. White mashed them into one dish and one Friday video. It is not a weigh-in. It is not a prediction. It is the CEO telling you he owns the whole Saturday.
He has called Garcia a kid who ducks nobody and Benn a good boy who does what it takes. He has a boxing company and an MMA company on the same calendar date for the first time that matters this much. If the flights work, he eats the afternoon in Arizona and the night in Nevada. If they do not, the greatest day claim gets a hole in it.
Garcia vs Benn is still the bigger star fight. Noche is still the UFC’s holiday brand. Putting them on one clock is the point of the week. White cooking in a black T-shirt is the commercial. The product is two main events, two cities, one Independence weekend, and a promoter who does not want anyone choosing.
Saturday will tell whether the gap is real. Silva and Delgado go first. Garcia and Benn go last. White said he will do Noche, then head to the boxing. The Mexican shepherd’s pie is already eaten. The fights are not.
