Anthony Joshua Teases MMA Crossover After Years of Fighters Entering Boxing

Anthony Joshua may be looking beyond boxing for his next major combat sports chapter.

The former two-time unified heavyweight champion has hinted at a possible crossover into MMA, arguing that if mixed martial artists keep stepping into boxing, boxers may eventually need to return the favor.

“Why don’t I step over into their territory?” Joshua said. “They keep stepping into ours. I think that’ll be the next thing we want to see.”

It was a short comment, but coming from one of boxing’s biggest heavyweight names, it immediately created debate.

Combat sports are no longer separated the way they once were.

MMA fighters have crossed into boxing for major paydays, global attention, and legacy opportunities. Joshua has already faced that world from the boxing side, including his knockout win over former UFC champion Francis Ngannou in 2024.

Now, Joshua seems open to the idea of reversing the trend.

Instead of only watching MMA fighters enter boxing rings, he is suggesting that a boxer could step into the cage and test himself under a completely different rule set.

The Challenge Would Be Massive

Joshua’s boxing would be dangerous in any combat sport.

He has size, power, timing, and elite heavyweight experience. With a professional record of 29 wins, 26 by knockout, and 4 losses, Joshua has proven he can finish fights at the highest level.

In the cage, Joshua would have to deal with leg kicks, takedowns, clinch control, submissions, cage wrestling, and smaller gloves. His hands would still be a major weapon, but boxing alone is not enough in MMA.

That is what makes the idea so interesting. Fans would not just be watching to see if Joshua can punch. They would be watching to see if he can survive everything else.

Joshua Still Has Boxing Business Ahead

Even with the MMA talk, Joshua’s boxing career is not finished.

His current 2026 roadmap includes a planned fight with Kristian Prenga on July 25 in Riyadh, followed by the possibility of a massive all-British showdown with Tyson Fury later in the year if everything goes to plan.

That means an MMA crossover would likely not happen immediately.

Joshua still has major boxing opportunities ahead, and a Fury fight remains one of the biggest matchups the sport can make.

Why Fans Would Watch

Anthony Joshua stepping into MMA would be one of the biggest crossover stories in combat sports.

Boxing fans would want to see if his power translates. MMA fans would want to see how quickly he gets tested outside his comfort zone. Casual fans would watch because Joshua’s name still carries global weight.

That kind of curiosity is what makes crossover fights so valuable.

They do not need to be perfect sporting matchups to create attention. They need questions — and Joshua in MMA would create plenty.

Anthony Joshua hinting at an MMA crossover adds another major talking point to the boxing vs MMA debate.

His message is simple: MMA fighters keep entering boxing, so maybe it is time for a boxer to enter their world.

Realistically, the challenge would be huge. Joshua would bring elite punching power, but MMA would force him to learn an entirely different game.

Still, the idea alone is powerful.

And in the modern combat sports era, sometimes one bold quote is enough to start a whole new conversation.
