Conor McGregor Prioritizes Islam Makhachev Over Justin Gaethje “I Fancy the Triple Crown”
Conor McGregor made it clear during a recent press conference that his focus is not on Justin Gaethje right now. When asked about Gaethje’s comments ahead of his fight with Max Holloway, McGregor gave a direct and dismissive response.
“Yeah, join the queue, join the queue, there’s a few here now,” McGregor said when told Gaethje wants to punch him in the face.
McGregor then addressed Gaethje’s status as the lightweight champion and quickly moved past the idea of fighting him.
“Yeah, look, he has the lightweight belt,” McGregor said. “Holloway put him face down, also, badly, badly face down.”
The message was clear. McGregor is not interested in pursuing a fight with Gaethje at this time. He pointed out how dominant Max Holloway was in their fight and used that as a reason to downplay Gaethje’s current standing.
When pressed further about potentially moving back down to lightweight, McGregor was honest about where his head is at.
“I’m not even thinking of it at this time,” he said. “But to go down to lightweight again is also another thing I’m not so sure.”
Instead, McGregor revealed what he is actually thinking about. He wants to chase something much bigger.
“I fancy the Triple Crown,” McGregor stated.
For McGregor, that means going after Islam Makhachev’s welterweight title. While he is currently preparing to face Max Holloway, his long-term vision appears to be moving up in weight and attempting to become a three-division champion.
This shift in focus shows McGregor is thinking beyond just his next fight. Even though he has a big rematch coming up with Holloway, he is already looking ahead to bigger challenges. The idea of capturing the welterweight title and completing the Triple Crown seems to be what excites him most right now.
Gaethje’s comments and the possibility of a lightweight title fight were quickly brushed aside. McGregor made it clear that his mind is elsewhere.
Whether McGregor can actually make the move to welterweight and challenge for Makhachev’s title remains to be seen. But his comments show exactly where his ambitions lie at the moment.
For now, McGregor is locked in on Holloway. But he has already made it known that his ultimate goal goes far beyond that fight.
