Arman Tsarukyan Knocks Out Mauricio Ruffy in Round 1 at UFC 331
Arman Tsarukyan closed the lightweight argument he came to Los Angeles to make.
The No. 2 contender knocked out Mauricio Ruffy with elbows at 4:56 of Round 1 in the co-main event of UFC 331 on Saturday at Crypto.com Arena.
Ruffy had just stunned him with a right hand. Tsarukyan still found the takedown, then the fence, then a short elbow that ended the night.
A follow-up elbow put Ruffy on his back. The lights were already out.
It was Tsarukyan’s sixth straight win and his first UFC fight since submitting Dan Hooker in November 2025.
He said afterward that he knew a finish was required for a title shot and that he was going to get one.
The result moved Tsarukyan to 24-3 overall and 11-2 in the UFC. Ruffy fell to 14-3 and 5-2 inside the Octagon.
Ruffy arrived as a live puncher off knockouts of Rafael Fiziev and Michael Chandler. He kept the fight standing long enough to land that early right.
Takedown defense held for most of the round. It did not hold when Tsarukyan changed levels in the final seconds and threw the elbow over the top.
That is the version of Tsarukyan the division has been waiting to see on a big stage. He did not grind out five rounds. He finished a dangerous striker before the horn.
Lightweight champion Justin Gaethje is the man in front of him. Tsarukyan was once booked to fight Islam Makhachev for the title and never made the scale after a back injury.
A split-decision win over Charles Oliveira at UFC 300 and the Hooker submission kept him near the top. Saturday’s knockout is the cleanest statement since then.
Ruffy remains one of the most violent 155-pounders on the roster. One late elbow does not erase the wheel-kick finish of Chandler or the Fiziev stoppage.
It does stall a title climb that needed a win over a top-two name. The Brazilian will have to rebuild against ranked competition that now has film of him going out on his feet.
Tsarukyan has the finish, the streak, and the ranking. What he does not have yet is the belt.
No official title booking has been announced. The co-main event was billed as a fight that could force that conversation.
Twelve seconds before the end of Round 1, Tsarukyan forced it. Gaethje is the next name that makes sense if the UFC wants the clearest lightweight fight available.
Ruffy will look for another power pairing. Tsarukyan will wait for the phone call he has been chasing since the missed weight that cost him a shot at Makhachev.
The elbow in Los Angeles is now the loudest item on that résumé.
